God did not leave Moses without direction or power when He sent him to carry out an impossible task. God gave Moses instructions and information about what would happen as Moses faced a powerful man in a powerful position. The calling on Moses’ life was not without danger, but God had promised something to Moses that He promises us today: A game-changing truth we cannot miss, “Certainly, I will be with you.” (Exodus 3:12)
The mission of Moses was one of impossible odds. One man led millions out of a land of slavery to a land of freedom only after convincing the ruler of that nation, who probably liked enslaving people, to let them go. Moses had another problem. He was not “skilled in speech.” Moses claimed he was “slow of speech and tongue,” which could be an issue in addressing a ruler who was considered a god by his constituents. Like so many of us, Moses was not ignorant of his inability, and, like so many of us, he made sure God would not be ignorant of it either.
Moses was not at a loss for words about his inability to carry out the task God had assigned him. Inadequacy, hypothetical barriers, and difficulty articulating his thoughts were his initial arguments to help God understand His poor choice in picking him for the task. Moses cried out to God, saying, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharoah and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” In His response to Moses, God said something we should consider.
“And He said, ‘Certainly, I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.” Exodus 3:11-12
We have hopefully heard this wonderful truth before, but it bears repeating. When God sends us to be on mission with Him, to complete a task, He is not sending us based on who we are, but Who He is! God reminds Moses of His Presence with him as he carries out an otherwise impossible task. He reminds Moses that His Presence is a certainty and that the mission will be successful. Success is promised because God gives Moses a sign pointing to the task’s success. “WHEN you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.” God saw the result because God will fulfill His Word to accomplish His mission. The truth is that we get to be a part of God’s more excellent work.
We, too, have been called to specific tasks. God has sent us with the promise of His Presence. We have the promises of His Word available to us as we join Him in His work. As we obey the calling on our lives, let us go with the assurance of the Presence and power of God because our task is not dependent on our ability or inability, so let us not focus on those things. The outcome of the work to which God calls us is sure. His ability is equal to His calling on our lives. Let us obey in the sweet assurance of God being with us, for that is a certainty!
